Remote access to the office network
To increase productivity and improve customer service, businesses can use a range of technology solutions to extend their office networks. Extending a virtual private network into a director's home means they can be accessible whenever collaborative work or urgent authorisation is needed. With VoIP telephony, a handset with a secure VPN connection over the public Internet connects them to the rest of their team as if they were talking on an internal office line.
VPNs provide a secure tunnel across the public Internet. Great for connecting to the network to download documents and for technicians doing remote diagnostics.
Free of charge products like LogMeIn make it easy to support users of networked PCs remotely. Not so good for home-working as the office PC must be left switched on and the screen will display what is being done remotely.
Terminal Server or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Designed for professional organisations requiring secure and reliable remote working solutions. Users connect to a dedicated server which authenticates them and presents a virtual desktop to the remote user.
- Feels like working directly on the office network
- Fast and reliable
- Easy to adminster so less chance of files being duplicated
- Secure – no need to leave office PCs switched on
- Documents stay on company network so malware cannot be emailed to clients
- Hosted Terminal server is accessible by all users if office server is out of service.
Microsoft Office 365 includes hosted Exchange and Sharepoint, a new environment for document management, collaboration, workflow and remote working. It can be set up as a Cloud based service or on a local SQL database server. Sharepoint is supplied with standard templates that can be used by untrained users. It can be customised by software developers using Visual Basic or C#. Sharepoint can be used within a browser or accessed offline using Sharepoint Workspace- a standard product within MS Office 2010.
